Sam Robson, an entrepreneur from Ipswich, is passionate about music and education.
He faced redundancy when working in the music industry, and decided to take matters into his own hands and become his own boss. After failing to obtain support from banks, he discovered the Start Up Loans Company.
He established his company IEM, Industry Education in Music, to run workshops on the music industry for school children, providing information on careers within the industry, song writing, performance and more.
He provides information on opportunities and careers within the industry, and his own experiences help guide him with the support he provides to those wanting to work in the music industry. He has a great relationship with his business mentor who has been a huge support in helping the business succeed, and who Sam is very thankful for.
Do not belittle mentoring. It is just as important as the money.
To date IEM has run over 400 workshops in schools, all tailored to suit children of different ages and mixed abilities, from year 8 to GCSE, BTEC and A Level.
To assist with workshops, Sam and the IEM team often enlist musicians, who include Connor Adams, Renegade Twelve and Lewis Mokler. The artists share their own experiences with the students and also perform live. IEM also have some great partners from the music industry including Marshall Amplifications and Yamaha that help contribute to workshops and offer opportunities to young musicians.
Numerous schools from across the UK can testify to how good the IEM workshops are, how much they impact students and how informative and entertaining they are. All great news for budding pupils looking to enter the music industry.
